Giving Goods a Second Life

At Alsco Uniforms®, we’re deeply committed to making a positive impact on both our local and global communities. Through the dedication of our volunteer Alsco Uniforms® Ambassadors, we’ve developed a growing initiative that provides a second life to products, reduces waste, and supports the people who need it most.

Partnerships & Efforts:

We proudly support over 80 charitable organizations across New Zealand and abroad, with long-standing partnerships such as Shine, Healthy Homes, and Medical Aid Abroad. Under the leadership of Pat Munro and her dedicated team, our ambassadors have made a significant impact on communities in need, especially during challenges like the Covid-19 pandemic. In 2023 alone, we donated more than 2,000 first aid kits and a large amount of repurposed bed linen, sheets, pillows, cot sheets, and more.

Additionally, we’re proud to work with PBT (Peter Baker Transport), who generously provide free transportation of donated goods across New Zealand.

Alsco Uniforms® Supports the Auckland City Mission Cook-Off

Alsco Uniforms® is proud to participate in the Auckland City Mission Cook off for the fifth year in a row! This event unites business leaders, chefs, and volunteers to cook a three-course meal for 150 guests, many of whom face homelessness or food insecurity.

In 2024, our Fresh & Clean Business Manager, Troy Wild, represented Alsco Uniforms® by cooking a delicious meal and raising an impressive $45,000, far exceeding his goal of $10,000. These funds will help provide nutritious meals and support to families in need.

Troy shared the following about the event:

On June 10th at St Mathew in the City, I had the honour of taking part in the Auckland City Mission Cook Off. Alongside business leaders and top chefs, we came together for an evening of great food and even better company. We prepared a special three-course dinner for 150 people, many of whom are facing homelessness or ongoing challenges putting food on the table.”

Troy shared the following about the event:

It was eye-opening to learn that one in five Auckland families are struggling to feed their families every week. The Mission distributes up to 1,000 food parcels weekly and serves over 1,500 meals to those in need, many of whom are living in substandard conditions or on the streets.”

Troy shared the following about the event:

As winter approaches, those living in these difficult circumstances will bear the brunt of cold and wet weather, further deepening their struggles. We must come together to make a difference and provide hope and practical support to those in our community who need it most.”

giving something back

Our Partership with the Million Metres Streams Project

In early 2017, Alsco Uniforms® partnered with the Million Metres Streams Project to help restore and transform New Zealand’s waterways. This initiative, led by the Sustainable Business Network (SBN) with support from Alsco Uniforms® and the Department of Conservation (DOC), aims to replant one million metres of waterways by 2026.

Each winter, Alsco Uniforms® staff participate in planting days across the country, contributing to the greening of New Zealand’s waterways. Since the beginning of our partnership, we’ve made a significant impact, with the following milestones:

Healthy Homes Rotorua

SustainabilityOptions is an altruistic business established with a core purpose: to work for the benefit of others with compassion and generosity. They provide free sustainability living advice in the Bay of Plenty Region. Their vision is to support every kiwi home to be warmer and drier and to improve the wellbeing of those living there.

Alsco Uniforms® has been absolutely amazing in their support of our Healthy Homes service in the wider Bay of Plenty over the past 6 years. It’s been a great relationship. The sheets we receive are not only used for bedding to help reduce skin infections, but we also use the sheets provided to assist us with curtain linings, which greatly improve the performance of curtains in helping the home retain heat. The first aid kits are so gratefully received by the families we are supporting. Every year, over 28,000 children are admitted to hospital with respiratory conditions that are associated wit cold, damp housing. The relationship we have with Alsco Uniforms® is a really important part of our work in helping cold, at risk, vulnerable families to live in warmer, drier, healthier homes. Thank you hugely to the Alsco Uniforms® team for your ongoing and amazing support.

Ronald McDonald House

RMHC® New Zealand supports families when their child is in a hospital away from home. Simply, they give families with a hospitalised child what they need most — each other.

Since 2020 Alsco Uniforms® has been sponsoring Room 832 at our Auckland Domain Ronald McDonald House®. They have given New Zealand families a ‘home-away-from-home’ while their child is in hospital, providing much-needed financial support to families who desperately need their help. Alsco Uniforms® has enabled RMHC New Zealand® to provide and maintain a comfortable and beautifully furnished bedroom and bathroom. The room Alsco Uniforms® sponsors is so essential to families’ wellbeing, offering a safe haven at some of the most difficult times in their lives. Their investment has assisted with keeping their room freshly painted, and affording soft quilts for beds, fresh towels and home comforts.

Take My Hands

Take My Hands is a social enterprise that contributes to improved healthcare in the Pacific through the access of good medical equipment and knowledge from New Zealand.

Alsco Uniforms® have been working with Take My Hands to get much needed supplies to hospitals and health centers in the Pacific. We take for granted our access in New Zealand to great equipment and the supplies needed to provide good healthcare. In the Pacific that same access is a challenge with financial and logistical barriers preventing them from accessing even the most basic supplies. With their help we have supplied linens for hospital beds and aged care facilities, and first aid supplies to for rural health centres in the Pacific. The team at Alsco Uniforms® constantly amaze us with their willingness to go the extra mile in making this world a better place to be.

Sustainability Trust

Founded in 2003 at Porirua’s Trash Palace, a small group of environmentalists began educating locals on waste reduction and sustainable living. The initiative gained momentum in 2004 when it received government support to provide insulation for low-income households, warming 68 homes that year. Today, the organisation insulates around 900 homes annually and operates a bustling Wellington hub.

Since 2019, Alsco Uniforms® has proudly partnered with the Sustainability Trust Wellington to support the Curtain Bank. By donating repurposed sheets and tablecloths, they are reused and made into curtain liners, which helps make houses warmer while reducing waste. In 2023, we contributed 79 boxes (approximately 948kg), and as of 2024, we’ve already provided 81 boxes (around 927 kg). This initiative is a true win-win, supporting both our community and a more sustainable future.
