Cooking for a Cause: Scott Bason and Alsco Fresh & Clean Step Up at the Auckland City Mission Cook-Off 2026

Cooking for a Cause: Alsco Fresh & Clean at the Auckland City Mission Cook-Off 2026 | Alsco Uniforms NZ

Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland

Another year of proudly supporting the annual Te Tāpui Atawhai Auckland City Mission Cook-Off — and this time, our Fresh & Clean Manager, Scott Bason, stepped into the kitchen alongside fellow business leaders from around the motu, guided by some of the country’s leading chefs.

Scott joined the mains team for the evening, working directly with celebrated chef Peter Gordon to prepare dishes worthy of the occasion. Together, teams crafted a four-course meal for more than 200 Mission guests — an effort that combined culinary skill, teamwork, and a shared commitment to giving back.

In the Kitchen with the Best

The Auckland City Mission Cook-Off is no ordinary dinner service. It brings together business leaders from across Aotearoa, pairs them with some of the country’s finest chefs, and tasks them with preparing a restaurant-quality meal under real kitchen conditions — all to raise critical funds for the Mission’s work supporting Aucklanders in need.

For Scott, it was an opportunity to represent Alsco Fresh & Clean in a very different kind of environment. Swapping the day-to-day operations of washroom and hygiene services for the heat of a professional kitchen, he worked alongside Peter Gordon and the mains team to deliver dishes that did justice to the occasion.

Together, teams prepared a four-course meal for more than 200 Mission guests. The Cook-Off has now raised over $412,000, helping to provide more than 25,000 meals this winter.

The Cook-Off has become a cornerstone event on the Auckland City Mission calendar, and each year the generosity of participants, sponsors, and donors grows. The $412,000 raised this year will directly fund meals, support services, and essential care for Aucklanders experiencing homelessness, food insecurity, and hardship through the coldest months.

Behind Every Great Meal

While Scott handled the cooking, Alsco also played a supporting role behind the scenes. We were proud to supply the tea towels and chefswear for the night — a small contribution, perhaps, but one that reflects what we do every day: equipping businesses and community organisations with the essentials they need to operate safely, cleanly, and professionally.

A Commitment That Runs Deep

Our involvement with the Auckland City Mission Cook-Off is part of a broader commitment to community that sits at the heart of Alsco Uniforms New Zealand. Whether it’s lacing up for Round the Bays, supporting local charities, or showing up at events like this one, giving back is woven into who we are.

Our Community Promise

Alsco Uniforms has set a goal to invest $4 million dollars back into our people and our communities by 2030. Events like the Cook-Off are a tangible expression of that commitment — showing up, getting involved, and doing our part.

Because a business is only as strong as the community it serves. And in Tāmaki Makaurau, that community is whānau.

To Scott Bason, for stepping up and representing Fresh & Clean with pride — ka pai. To Peter Gordon and the chef team, for guiding the evening with skill and warmth. And to the Auckland City Mission, for the tireless work you do every day to care for those who need it most.

Here’s to next year’s Cook-Off.

Fire Retardant Workwear Hire in New Zealand: The Complete Guide

Fire retardant (FR) workwear is a legal and moral requirement for workers exposed to fire, arc flash, or thermal hazards in New Zealand. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, employers have a duty to provide suitable PPE for workers in high-risk environments. That includes fire rated uniforms and arc rated workwear for electrical and industrial roles. A complete workplace safety programme also requires appropriate first aid kit servicing and managed restocking — Alsco provides both under a single managed service model.

What Are Fire Retardant Overalls?

Fire retardant overalls are garments made from fabrics that resist ignition and self-extinguish when the heat source is removed. The most common certified fabrics are Proban (a chemical treatment applied to cotton that remains effective through multiple wash cycles when laundered correctly) and Megatec 300N (an inherently fire-resistant fabric used for higher-risk arc flash environments).

Unlike standard workwear, fire rated uniforms must be laundered to specific industrial standards to maintain their protective properties. Standard domestic washing degrades the flame-resistant treatment over time. This is one of the primary reasons that managed workwear hire is the preferred solution for safety-conscious NZ businesses. For a broader look at how overalls provide workplace protection, read our guide on what do overalls protect you from.

What is Arc Rated Workwear?

Arc rated workwear is specifically tested and certified to protect against electric arc flash incidents. An arc flash is a violent electrical discharge that releases intense heat, pressure, and light. Arc rated garments are classified by their Arc Thermal Performance Value (ATPV), measured in calories per centimetre squared (cal/cm²). The higher the ATPV, the greater the protection.

For electrical workers in New Zealand, arc rated workwear is not optional where arc flash risk has been identified. Alsco supplies and manages arc rated garments using Megatec 300N fabric, ensuring your team meets the required protection level for their work environment.

Fire Retardant Overalls Auckland: Pricing and Hire Options

Rather than purchasing fire retardant overalls outright, which can cost $150 to $400+ per garment, Alsco’s managed hire model means your business pays a predictable per-person weekly rental fee. This covers the garment supply, industrial laundering, ongoing maintenance, and automatic replacement when garments reach end of life.

For fire retardant overalls pricing in Auckland, the rental rate depends on your team size, garment type, and service frequency. Contact Alsco directly on 0800 425 726 for a custom quote tailored to your workforce.

Women’s Fire Retardant Overalls Auckland

Alsco supplies women’s FR overalls in a proper women’s fit across all size ranges. In the past, women in industrial roles were forced to wear men’s garments that didn’t fit correctly, creating safety risks through loose fabric near equipment. Our women’s fire retardant overalls are designed to provide the same certified protection level in a garment that actually fits.

Available for hire across Auckland and throughout New Zealand, women’s FR overalls are available in Proban-treated cotton and Megatec 300N options depending on the hazard level required.

High Voltage Overalls and Electrical PPE

High voltage (HV) workers face unique risks that require specialist garments beyond standard FR workwear. High voltage overalls from Alsco are selected for workers in transmission, distribution, and substation environments where proximity to live HV equipment is part of the job. All HV overalls are managed through the same hire cycle, ensuring consistent compliance across your entire crew.

Common Questions About FR Workwear Hire in NZ

Pricing is based on your team size, the garment type required, and your service frequency. There are no upfront costs with Alsco’s managed hire model. You pay a per-person weekly rental fee that covers the garment, laundering, maintenance, and replacement. Call us on 0800 425 726 for a custom quote specific to your Auckland operation.

Yes. We provide purpose-built women’s FR overalls available for hire across Auckland and throughout New Zealand. Available in a full size range from XS to 3XL in both Proban and Megatec 300N fabrics depending on the protection level required.

Yes. Our fire retardant workwear uses Proban and Megatec 300N certified fabrics that meet New Zealand and international safety standards including IEC 61482 for arc flash protection. Our industrial laundering processes maintain the integrity of FR treatments throughout the garment lifecycle, which domestic washing cannot guarantee.

Fire resistant (FR) fabric is inherently resistant to flame as part of its fibre composition (like Megatec 300N). Fire retardant fabric is treated with a chemical process (like Proban) to add flame resistance to the base fabric (typically cotton). Both types self-extinguish when the ignition source is removed. Both are certified for industrial use and available through Alsco’s managed hire service.

Yes. Alsco supplies and manages arc rated workwear for electrical contractors, utility workers, and industrial teams across New Zealand. Arc rated garments are available in Megatec 300N fabric, certified to IEC 61482, and managed through our full hire cycle including collection, industrial laundering, and replacement.

No upfront costs and no deposit required to get started. Alsco operates a fully managed workwear rental service. We supply the garments, manage the laundering and maintenance, and replace worn garments automatically. You pay a simple per-person rental fee on your preferred billing cycle.

Back to the Bays: Auckland Fresh & Clean Participates in Round the Bays 2026

Look through a mix of throwbacks from our NZTS days and some brilliant moments from this year’s run and walk.

Alsco Fresh & Clean team at Round the Bays 2026

Tāmaki Makaurau, Auckland

On a bright Auckland morning on Sunday 8 March, 28 members of our Fresh & Clean team laced up their shoes, pinned on their bibs, and joined thousands of New Zealanders for Round the Bays 2026.

Some came ready to run. Others planned to walk every step of the 8.4 kilometres. But every single one of them showed up — and that’s the part we’re most proud of.

The Day Itself

Southern Cross Round the Bays is New Zealand’s largest fun run series, and the Auckland event lived up to its reputation. The flat coastal course wound its way along one of the city’s most spectacular waterfronts, with Rangitoto sitting steady on the horizon and the energy of tens of thousands of participants carrying everyone forward.

The event has always championed inclusion — whether you run, jog, walk or roll — and that spirit was everywhere on the course. Families, workmates, community groups, seasoned runners and first-timers all sharing the same road and the same goal: to get to the finish line together.

Team on the coastal Round the Bays route
The Auckland coastline provided a stunning backdrop for the 8.4km route.

Our Fresh & Clean team embodied exactly that. No one was left behind. Faster runners cheered on those still on their way. Tired legs were met with encouragement. And when the finish line finally came into view, the smiles said everything that needed to be said.

No one was left behind. Faster runners cheered on those still on their way. Tired legs were met with encouragement.

After crossing the finish line, the team came together for a well-earned BBQ — rehydrating, sharing stories from the course, and celebrating the effort it took just to get to the start line in the first place.

A Full Circle Moment

What made this year’s Round the Bays particularly special wasn’t just the 8.4 kilometres. It was what the event meant for us as a company.

Cast your mind back to the late 1980s and early 1990s. Acid wash jeans were in. Big, frizzy hair was in. And so, it turns out, was our team at Round the Bays Auckland.

Team at the post-race BBQ celebration

Our Heritage

Back then, we weren’t called Alsco Uniforms New Zealand. We were NZTS, New Zealand Textile Services, and we were regulars at this very event.

In 1998, the Steiner family acquired NZTS and the business became Alsco New Zealand — eventually growing into the Alsco Uniforms New Zealand you know today: operating eight processing plants, 14 depots, and serving more than 43,000 customers across the country.

The brand evolved. The name changed. But looking back at those old photos from the NZTS days, grainy, joyful, unmistakably us — it’s clear that something essential never changed at all.

Returning to Round the Bays in 2026 felt like more than a team fitness challenge. It was a nod to our heritage, and a reminder that while decades have passed and our name is different, our commitment to our people and our community is exactly the same as it always was.

Why We Showed Up

Round the Bays is more than a fun run. The event actively fundraises for charities across New Zealand, with the Mental Health Foundation of NZ leading the charge as the top supported charity across all three cities in the 2026 series.

That’s something we care about deeply at Alsco Uniforms New Zealand. Our values have always centred on creating a safe, enriching workplace for our 916 employees — because we know that when people feel supported, connected and well, everything else follows. Round the Bays, with its focus on inclusion, community, and hauora, reflects those same values back to us.

Getting 28 Fresh & Clean team members out together at a run on a Sunday morning wasn’t just a good thing for fitness. It’s good for connecting with each other and community, for culture, and for building the kind of team spirit that makes a workplace somewhere people are genuinely proud to be part of.

Ka Pai, Team

To every one of the 28 Fresh & Clean team members who showed up on Sunday 8 March — whether you ran the whole thing, walked every step, or somewhere in between — this one’s for you.

Fresh & Clean team celebrating at Round the Bays 2026

You represented Fresh & Clean and Alsco Uniforms New Zealand with pride, and you did something our NZTS team did decades before you: you showed up for each other and for your community.

Fresh & Clean team — Round the Bays 2026

While styles may change, getting involved as a team never goes out of fashion.

We’ll see you at the bays again next year. 💙

Think about the last time a uniform went missing on your site. Someone had to chase it. Someone had to replace it. Someone had to pay for it.

For most New Zealand businesses, work uniforms feel like a small operational detail. They are not. When you add up garment procurement, industrial washing, repairs, replacements for lost or damaged items, and the staff time spent managing it all, the true cost of running uniforms in-house is almost always higher than what shows up in the budget line.

Alsco Uniforms has been solving this problem for NZ businesses since 1910. We have built the only truly nationwide managed uniform program in the country, serving more than 40,000 New Zealand businesses across every major industry from Auckland to Invercargill.

Why Managed Uniforms Make Sense in 2026

New Zealand businesses are under more operational pressure than ever. Labour costs are up. Compliance requirements are tighter. The administrative burden on operations and HR teams keeps growing. Uniforms sit right in the middle of all three.

A managed uniform service removes every part of that burden. Supply, industrial laundering, repairs, and replacements are all handled by the provider on a fixed periodic fee. There is no upfront capital outlay, no surprise replacement costs, and no admin hours disappearing into chasing lost garments.

In food processing and healthcare environments, garments must be laundered to certified professional standards. Sending uniforms home with staff or using a standard commercial laundry does not meet NZ food safety or health and safety obligations. It exposes your business to real risk.

Key Principle

A managed rental arrangement replaces irregular, unpredictable uniform spend with a single fixed cost covering supply, laundering, repairs, replacements, and delivery. Every staff member, across every shift, arrives in clean, correctly branded attire.

Uniforms by Industry: Quick-Reference Overview

Not all uniforms are the same. A chef’s coat has nothing in common with a hi-vis vest. Flame-retardant overalls are a world away from a corporate polo. Alsco Uniforms supplies and manages garments purpose-built for each of New Zealand’s major industries.

Food Processing & Manufacturing Uniforms in NZ

Food processing uniforms NZ

No sector in New Zealand has tighter uniform hygiene requirements than food processing. Under the Food Act 2014, businesses must demonstrate that garments are laundered to standards that prevent contamination entering the production environment.

Alsco Uniforms is the only provider in New Zealand offering positive pressure cleanroom laundering with full JLS compliance across a nationwide network. Every garment is processed in a dedicated cleanroom environment, ensuring it arrives at your facility meeting the strictest food safety protocols.

What Food Processing Businesses Get

  • Contaminant-free workwear including hairnets, smocks, food-safe coats, aprons, and over-garments
  • JLS-compliant cleanroom laundering in a positive pressure facility to prevent recontamination
  • Garments designed for comfort during extended production line shifts
  • Individual garment assignment with full barcode tracking
  • Regular scheduled collection, laundering, and redelivery

Why This Matters

A single contamination incident from inadequately laundered workwear can shut down a food production facility, trigger regulatory action, and cause lasting reputational damage. The cost of a managed uniform program is a fraction of that risk.

Barcode Uniform Tracking Technology

Lost uniforms are one of the most common frustrations in managing workwear at scale. A garment goes out for laundering and does not come back. The billing does not match what you have on the floor. Alsco Uniforms eliminates this with individual garment barcode tracking.

01
Individual Garment Assignment

Each garment is barcoded to a specific employee. The right garment goes to the right person, every cycle.

02
Full Laundering Traceability

Every wash cycle is recorded. You have proof each garment was professionally laundered to the required standard for food safety and hygiene audits.

03
Auto Replacement Triggers

The system monitors garment wear and condition. When a garment approaches end of life, it is flagged for replacement automatically.

04
Accurate Billing

You are billed for exactly what is in active use. No more paying for garments assigned to staff who left months ago.

05
Inventory Visibility

Full real-time visibility over your entire garment inventory across every site and shift.

06
Audit-Ready Records

A complete, date-stamped audit trail for every garment. Critical for food safety, healthcare, and WH&S compliance inspections.

Managed Rental vs. In-House: Full Cost Comparison

The upfront cost comparison between buying uniforms outright and paying a monthly managed rental fee looks deceptively simple. The managed option looks like an ongoing cost. The purchase option looks like a one-time expense. But that framing leaves out the bulk of what in-house uniform management actually costs.

Frequently Asked Questions

What industries does Alsco Uniforms NZ supply uniforms for?+

Alsco Uniforms NZ serves seven major sectors: food processing and manufacturing, hospitality and food and beverage, industrial (engineering, automotive, and trades), accommodation, commercial and corporate, government and public sector, and education and childcare. Each sector has different garment types, laundering standards, and compliance requirements, and Alsco’s managed program is tailored to each.

How does Alsco’s barcode uniform tracking work?+

Every garment is assigned a unique barcode that tracks it from initial issue through every wash cycle, repair, and eventual replacement. This gives businesses full inventory visibility, accurate billing, documented compliance records for audits, and automated replacement triggers when garments approach end of useful life.

Is a managed uniform rental cheaper than buying uniforms outright?+

For most NZ businesses, yes. The managed rental fee replaces every hidden cost of in-house uniform management: upfront procurement, laundering, repairs, replacements, admin time, and compliance risk. A managed rental is also an operating expense and generally tax deductible, unlike a capital purchase.

Does Alsco NZ service businesses outside of major cities?+

Yes. Alsco Uniforms operates company-owned branches and service hubs across New Zealand, including Auckland, Wellington, Christchurch, Hamilton, Tauranga, Dunedin, Palmerston North, Nelson, Napier, Rotorua, Invercargill, and Whangarei. Service is delivered directly by Alsco staff with no subcontractors. Businesses across multiple regions manage their entire program through a single national contract.

Can Alsco add custom logos and branding to uniforms?+

Yes. Alsco Uniforms offers custom branding including embroidery of logos and company names, staff name tags, branded labels, and colour-matched attire across all garment types including industrial workwear, hospitality uniforms, corporate shirts, and food processing attire.

Are work uniforms tax deductible in New Zealand?+

According to Inland Revenue (IRD), branded uniforms with company logos, protective workwear required for WH&S compliance, and specialist attire not suitable for private wear are generally tax deductible. For businesses using a managed rental service, the periodic rental fee is a business operating expense and is generally deductible in the period incurred. Always confirm with a qualified accountant.

What NZ food safety laundering requirements apply to food processing uniforms?+

Under the Food Act 2014, food processing businesses must ensure garments are laundered to a standard that prevents contamination. This requires industrial laundering in a controlled facility. Alsco Uniforms is the only NZ provider offering positive pressure cleanroom laundering with full JLS compliance.

What Your Workplace Bathroom Says About Your Business

Walk into a workplace washroom that is out of soap, has an overflowing bin, and smells like it was last serviced three weeks ago. Now think about what that communicates to every staff member and visitor who uses it.

A clean, well-stocked washroom is not optional. It is a baseline obligation for any employer. Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, businesses have a duty to provide adequate welfare facilities for their workers. That includes sanitary facilities that are clean, properly equipped, and appropriately maintained. Beyond compliance, your washroom reflects your standards. Businesses that take care of their people take care of their premises. Those that don’t are telling staff and customers the same thing.

This guide covers everything NZ businesses need to know about commercial washroom hygiene services: what is included, what the law requires, how to choose the right products for your environment, and why a managed washroom services contract is almost always the smarter choice over ad hoc purchasing.

What a Washroom Hygiene Service Includes

A managed washroom hygiene service covers the full suite of products and maintenance a commercial bathroom requires to operate cleanly and compliantly. The key difference between a managed service and buying products yourself is that the provider handles supply, installation, servicing, and replenishment on a schedule, so your facilities team never has to chase stock or deal with a bin that needs replacing.

A full commercial washroom service typically includes:

🗑️

Sanitary Bins

Hygienic feminine hygiene waste disposal with sealed, odour-controlled units. Collected and replaced on a regular service cycle.

👶

Nappy Disposal Units

Sealed nappy disposal bins for family change rooms. Hygiene-controlled and serviced on schedule.

🧴

Soap Dispensers & Bulk Soap

Wall-mounted or sensor dispensers loaded with commercial-grade soap. Refilled as part of the managed service.

🧻

Roller Towels or Paper Towels

Hand drying solutions for all facility types. Roller towel dispensers collected and replaced on service visits.

💨

Air Fresheners

Continuous or programmatic air freshening units maintaining a neutral, professional washroom environment.

📦

Consumable Restocking

Toilet tissue, paper towels, and other consumables restocked automatically as part of your service agreement.

The managed model means your team does not need to track stock levels, organise supply orders, or handle hygiene waste. The provider visits on a set schedule, services every unit, replaces what is needed, and leaves. Your washrooms stay compliant and stocked without anyone on your team thinking about it.

Sanitary Bins in NZ: What the Law Requires

Sanitary bins are not a courtesy item. For any workplace with female staff or female-accessible facilities, providing hygienic feminine hygiene waste disposal is a legal obligation.

Legal Obligations in NZ

The Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 requires PCBUs to provide adequate welfare facilities for workers, including sanitary facilities. Employment New Zealand guidelines on workplace sanitary facilities specify that female toilets must have a means of disposing of sanitary items. This means a sealed sanitary bin, not a standard waste bin.

For specific legal advice about your obligations, consult Employment New Zealand at employment.govt.nz or seek independent legal guidance.

A standard sanitary bin service in NZ typically operates on a fortnightly or monthly exchange cycle, depending on usage volume. The provider collects the used unit, leaves a clean replacement, and disposes of the waste in compliance with biohazardous waste regulations. The business never handles the waste directly.

What Makes a Compliant Sanitary Bin?

  • Sealed, foot-operated lid to prevent odour and ensure hands-free operation
  • Biohazard-compliant internal liner that is replaced at each service visit
  • Appropriate sizing for the expected usage volume of the facility
  • Odour-control mechanism built into the unit design

Sanitary bins NZ businesses need vary by workplace type. A small office with four female staff has different requirements to a retail store with 40 staff and a public-accessible bathroom. A managed sanitary bin service provider will assess your facilities and recommend the right unit count and service frequency for your specific situation.

Need a compliant sanitary bin service for your NZ business? Alsco Uniforms provides fully managed sanitary bin services with regular servicing included.

Nappy Disposal Services: What Businesses with Family Facilities Need to Know

Any business that provides family change room facilities needs a nappy disposal solution that is hygienic, odour-controlled, and properly managed. The problem with ad hoc nappy disposal is that without a dedicated sealed unit on a serviced cycle, bins overflow, odours develop, and the change room becomes a poor reflection on your business rather than the family-friendly facility you intended to provide.

Which Businesses Need Nappy Disposal Units?

  • Shopping centres and retail precincts with family change room facilities
  • Childcare centres and early childhood education facilities where nappy changes are routine throughout the operating day
  • Family restaurants, food courts, and cafe groups that offer parent facilities as part of their guest experience
  • Airports, transport hubs, and large public buildings with high family foot traffic
  • Hotels and accommodation providers serving families with young children

A managed nappy disposal service in NZ works on the same principle as a sanitary bin service: sealed units are installed in your change room facilities, collected on a regular service schedule, and replaced with clean units. The provider handles the biohazardous waste disposal compliantly, and the business never needs to manage the process directly.

The key feature to look for in a nappy disposal unit is positive-seal containment that controls odour between service visits. A unit that allows odour to escape defeats the purpose and creates a negative user experience in your change room.

Roller Towels vs Paper Towels vs Electric Hand Dryers: Which Is Right for Your Business?

Hand drying is one of those decisions that seems trivial until you are replacing paper towel dispensers for the third time in a month, or explaining to staff why the electric hand dryers are broken again. There is no universally correct answer here. The right choice depends on your facility type, traffic volume, sustainability position, and budget structure.

Factor Roller Towel Service Paper Towels Electric Hand Dryer
Hygiene High — fresh fabric section per use, sealed used portion High — single-use, no cross-contamination Variable — can circulate air-borne particles; depends on unit design
Ongoing Cost Predictable — included in managed service fee Variable — consumable cost adds up at volume Low ongoing cost once installed; higher upfront
Environmental Impact Lower — cotton towels are reused across many cycles Higher — single-use paper creates ongoing waste Lower waste, but higher energy consumption
User Experience High — comfortable, effective, familiar High — convenient and portable Mixed — noise and drying time are common complaints
Maintenance Provider manages — exchange on service visit Facilities team restocks — creates internal labour Facilities or contractor manages repairs and cleaning
Best For Offices, hospitality, food facilities, healthcare High-traffic public amenities needing flexible access High-volume public facilities where ongoing consumable cost is a priority

A roller hand towel service in NZ suits businesses that want a managed, no-hassle solution with consistent hygiene and a lower environmental footprint than paper. The towel dispenser is installed by the provider, and a fresh roller is exchanged at every service visit. The used roller goes back with the provider for industrial laundering. Your team does nothing.

Commercial hand dryers in NZ are typically best suited to high-volume public facilities such as shopping centres, airports, or sports venues where the capital investment is justified by the elimination of consumable restocking labour at scale. For most standard office, hospitality, or retail washrooms, the combination of upfront cost, maintenance dependency, and mixed user feedback makes them a less compelling default choice.

Hand Soap Dispensers and Bulk Soap for Commercial Washrooms

Hand hygiene compliance starts with accessible, well-maintained soap at every sink. What sounds straightforward becomes an ongoing operational task when businesses are buying retail soap, managing stock, refilling dispensers, and dealing with empty bottles at the worst possible moments.

Types of Commercial Soap Dispensers

  • Push dispensers are the most common type in commercial settings. Simple, reliable, and suitable for most washroom environments. Manual operation makes them intuitive for all users.
  • Sensor or touchless dispensers deliver soap without contact, reducing cross-contamination risk. Well suited to healthcare environments, food service washrooms, and any high-hygiene setting where touchless operation is a priority.
  • Wall-mounted bulk dispensers connect directly to a large soap reservoir, reducing how often refilling is required. Ideal for high-traffic facilities where a standard cartridge dispenser empties quickly.

Why Bulk Soap on a Managed Plan Makes More Sense

Retail hand soap purchased in individual bottles costs significantly more per unit volume than commercial bulk soap supplied through a managed contract. Bulk hand soap in NZ supplied through a washroom services provider comes in commercial-grade formulations, is dispensed through properly calibrated units at the right dose, and is refilled on a service schedule. You do not run out mid-shift because someone forgot to order more, and you do not overpay because you are buying from a supermarket at retail margins.

Commercial soap dispensers in NZ supplied through a managed service are also maintained by the provider. If a unit is faulty or damaged, it is replaced at the next service visit rather than becoming an outstanding maintenance ticket on your facilities list.

How Often Should Washroom Services Be Restocked and Serviced?

There is no single answer because the right service frequency depends on how many people use your facilities and how intensively. A useful starting point by business type:

Weekly

High-Traffic Retail & Hospitality

Shopping centres, large restaurants, hotels, and public amenities with significant daily throughput. Sanitary bins, soap, and towels can exhaust quickly at this volume.

Fortnightly

Mid-Size Offices & Workplaces

Standard commercial office environments with 20 to 100 staff. Most washroom products remain within capacity on a fortnightly service cycle.

Monthly

Small Offices & Industrial Sites

Small teams with limited daily washroom use. Monthly servicing is typically sufficient for sanitary bins and soap in low-footprint facilities.

The practical advantage of a managed washroom contract is that your provider sets the frequency based on your actual usage, not a generic default. If volume increases, the service frequency can be adjusted. If it drops, costs scale back accordingly. You never need to think about it.

The Case for a Managed Washroom Services Contract

Most businesses that manage washroom supplies in-house do not realise how much time and money they are spending on it. Someone is buying stock, tracking what is running low, organising delivery or pickup, refilling dispensers, and dealing with sanitary waste — all tasks that sit outside their core role and add up across a year.

  • Time savings. Your facilities or admin team stops managing washroom stock entirely. The provider handles supply, delivery, installation, and servicing on every visit.
  • Compliance assurance. Sanitary bins and nappy disposal units are serviced to hygiene standards by the provider. You meet your employer obligations without tracking them manually.
  • Cost predictability. A fixed periodic contract fee replaces unpredictable ad hoc purchasing. You know what washroom services cost each month, every month.
  • Never running out. Consumables are restocked on a scheduled service visit calibrated to your usage. No more emergency soap runs or staff complaints about empty dispensers.
  • Professional product quality. Commercial-grade soap, hygienic bin units, and properly calibrated dispensers deliver a consistently better user experience than retail products managed internally.

For most NZ businesses, a managed washroom hygiene service costs less than the true total of what they currently spend on products, labour, and the management overhead of doing it themselves. It is worth running the numbers before assuming the status quo is cheaper.

Floor Mats Are a Health and Safety Issue, Not Just Décor

Most businesses think about floor mats the way they think about office furniture: something you buy once, put in place, and forget about. That thinking is costing New Zealand workplaces more than they realise.

According to WorkSafe New Zealand, falls, slips and trips are among the most common causes of workplace injuries in NZ, with around 10,000 ACC claims approved every year related to falls on the same level alone. Wet floors, contaminated surfaces, and fatigue from standing on hard floors are contributing factors across industries from hospitality to construction to retail.

The right commercial floor mat, correctly positioned and properly maintained, is one of the most cost-effective hazard controls a business can put in place. A compliant entrance mat keeps moisture and debris off walking surfaces. An anti-fatigue mat reduces the physical toll on your team. A slip-resistant kitchen mat keeps your staff upright on greasy or wet floors.

This guide covers every mat category relevant to NZ commercial environments, compares hire versus purchase, and explains how a managed mat rental service takes the maintenance burden off your hands entirely.

Types of Commercial Mats: A Complete Overview

Commercial floor mats are not one-size-fits-all. The right mat for a restaurant kitchen is completely different from what belongs at a corporate reception. Understanding the categories helps you match the mat to the specific hazard or need in each area of your workplace.

This guide covers five main categories:

🚪

Entrance & Door Mats

Stop dirt and moisture at the door before it reaches your floors.

🦵

Anti-Fatigue Mats

Reduce physical strain for workers standing for long shifts.

💧

Slip-Resistant & Wet Area Mats

Hazard control for kitchens, washrooms, and wet industrial floors.

🍳

Commercial Kitchen Mats

Grease-resistant, draining, and fatigue-absorbing for food environments.

🏢

Logo & Branded Mats

Custom print mats that reinforce brand identity at the front door.

Entrance Mats and Door Mats

The entry point of any commercial building is where the outside world meets your interior floor. Rain, mud, grit, and moisture get tracked in by every visitor and staff member who walks through the door. Without the right entrance mat in place, that contamination spreads across your floors, creating slip hazards and accelerating floor wear.

Commercial entrance mats differ from residential mats in one critical way: they are engineered for volume and durability. A residential door mat handles dozens of entries a day. A commercial mat handles hundreds, sometimes thousands, and must still perform at the end of a wet winter afternoon.

The Three Main Entrance Mat Types

  • Scraper mats remove coarse dirt, gravel, and debris from shoe soles before anyone enters. Typically placed at the outermost entry point, often in a recessed mat well. Robust, high-pile construction handles heavy-duty outdoor grime.
  • Wiper mats absorb residual moisture after the scraping stage. Made from absorbent pile fabrics, they trap fine particles and water that would otherwise be carried further inside. Essential for wet-weather entry control.
  • Combination scraper-wiper mats handle both functions in one unit. The most practical choice for businesses with a single entry mat position. Ideal for retail, offices, and hospitality venues where space is limited.

For door mat rental in NZ, a managed hire service is the practical choice. Entrance mats absorb a significant volume of dirt and moisture over time, and once saturated, they stop performing and become a slip hazard in their own right. A rental service collects, professionally cleans, and redeploys mats on a regular schedule, ensuring they always perform at specification.

Research consistently shows that a well-placed entrance mat system can capture up to 80% of dirt and moisture at the door, dramatically reducing cleaning costs and floor damage over time. The mat pays for itself.

Anti-Fatigue Mats: Benefits for Standing Workers

Standing on a hard floor for a full shift is physically demanding in ways that are not immediately obvious. The continuous muscular effort required to maintain upright posture on an unyielding surface causes fatigue in the legs, lower back, and feet. Over time, this contributes to chronic musculoskeletal complaints, reduced productivity, and increased absenteeism.

Anti-fatigue mats are specifically engineered to address this. They work by providing a cushioned, slightly unstable surface that encourages micro-movements in the leg and calf muscles while standing. This low-level muscle activity promotes blood circulation, reduces the static load on joints, and significantly decreases the energy expenditure of standing over a long shift.

Anti-Fatigue Mat Benefits: What the Research Shows

Reduced Leg and Back Fatigue

Cushioned surfaces reduce the compressive load on joints and the lower back, the most common complaint among workers who stand all day.

Improved Circulation

The slight instability of an anti-fatigue mat keeps leg muscles subtly active, which promotes blood flow and prevents the pooling that causes foot swelling and discomfort.

Higher Productivity

Workers who are not fighting physical fatigue maintain focus and output for longer into a shift. The mat pays for itself in task performance.

Lower Absenteeism

Chronic standing-related injuries are a leading cause of sick days in hospitality, retail, and food production. Anti-fatigue matting reduces the rate of these injuries.

Better Staff Experience

Workers notice the difference. Anti-fatigue matting signals that the employer takes physical wellbeing seriously, contributing to staff retention.

PCBU Duty of Care

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015, PCBUs must manage risks to worker health. Prolonged standing on hard surfaces is a recognised ergonomic hazard.

Who Benefits from Anti-Fatigue Matting in NZ?

  • Commercial kitchen and hospitality workers standing on tile floors for 8-plus hour shifts
  • Retail staff on hard concrete or laminate floors at service counters and checkouts
  • Assembly line and production workers in manufacturing environments
  • Hairdressers and beauty technicians standing over clients for extended periods
  • Warehouse and dispatch workers at packing stations and benches

Anti-fatigue kitchen mats are a specific sub-category combining anti-fatigue cushioning with grease resistance, drainage channels, and easy-clean surfaces. They are built for the rigours of commercial food preparation environments where comfort, hygiene, and safety must all be addressed by a single mat.

Slip-Resistant and Wet Area Mats

Wet and contaminated floors are the primary driver of slip-and-fall incidents in NZ workplaces. Commercial kitchens, washrooms, food processing facilities, pool surrounds, and any wet industrial environment present ongoing slip risk that standard flooring cannot manage alone. Slip-resistant and wet area mats are a targeted hazard control for exactly these spaces.

Key Mat Types for Wet and High-Risk Areas

  • Drainage mats feature a raised grid or open-hole structure that allows water, grease, and cleaning fluids to drain away from the walking surface. Used in commercial kitchens, food processing plants, and washrooms. Removes the standing liquid that causes slips.
  • Rubber safety mats provide high-traction surfaces in wet environments. The rubber compound maintains grip even when wet and is resistant to oils and cleaning chemicals. Common in workshops, pool surrounds, and wet processing areas.
  • Wet area matting in washrooms and change rooms serves a dual purpose: providing a non-slip walking surface while also elevating foot contact away from standing water on floors. Critical in high-traffic amenities areas.

Non-slip mats in NZ must be selected for the specific liquid hazard they are controlling. Water behaves differently to cooking grease, which behaves differently to industrial chemicals. The mat backing must also grip the floor beneath it securely, as a mat that slides under foot pressure creates a different but equally serious hazard.

Important: A slip-resistant mat that is saturated, worn, or incorrectly sized for the area it covers provides false security rather than actual protection. Managed mat rental services address this by monitoring mat condition and replacing units before they lose effectiveness.

Slip-resistant matting in NZ is a simple, low-cost control measure under the HSWA hierarchy. As an administrative control, it supports the elimination of wet floor hazards at the surface level and should be combined with spill management procedures and adequate drainage.

Commercial Kitchen Mats

The commercial kitchen is one of the most physically demanding and hazard-dense environments in any NZ business. Hot surfaces, constant movement, heavy lifting, and floors that are routinely wet or greasy create a compound risk profile that requires purpose-built matting solutions.

Commercial kitchen mats in NZ need to deliver on four requirements simultaneously:

  • Grease resistance. Kitchen mats must repel cooking oils and food fats rather than absorbing them. Absorbed grease degrades mat structure, creates hygiene issues, and eventually makes the mat surface slippery rather than safe.
  • Drainage. Open drainage channels or raised-grid designs keep the standing surface above the liquid level on kitchen floors, ensuring the walking surface remains effective even during busy service periods.
  • Anti-fatigue cushioning. Kitchen workers stand for long shifts on hard tile floors. Anti-fatigue properties in kitchen matting reduce fatigue, lower injury risk, and improve staff endurance over a full service.
  • Cleanability. Mats in food preparation environments must withstand high-temperature cleaning, strong detergents, and pressure washing without losing structural integrity or surface properties.

Industries that rely on commercial kitchen matting in NZ include restaurants and cafes, hotel kitchens, aged care facility catering, school canteens, and food manufacturing plants. In food processing environments, mats must also comply with food-safe material requirements and be laundered or cleaned to hygiene standards that prevent cross-contamination.

Logo Entrance Mats and Custom Branded Matting

The front entrance of a business is a branding moment. Every customer, visitor, and client who walks through the door sees the floor before they see anything else at eye level. A custom logo entrance mat turns that moment into a brand impression rather than a missed opportunity.

Custom logo mats in NZ are produced by digitally printing or weaving your brand’s colours, logo, and any text directly into the mat surface. Modern production techniques deliver sharp, full-colour reproduction that withstands heavy foot traffic and commercial laundering without fading significantly over the mat’s service life.

How Custom Logo Mats Are Made

The most durable logo mats use a dye-injection or tufting process where the colour is embedded into the carpet pile rather than printed on the surface. This produces a mat that retains its visual quality through repeated cleaning cycles. Surface-printed mats are also available and offer sharper initial resolution but may show wear at high-traffic points sooner.

Typical Use Cases

  • Retail stores reinforcing brand identity at the point of entry, where first impressions drive purchase intent
  • Corporate offices and reception areas projecting a professional, branded environment to clients and visitors
  • Car dealerships and showrooms where brand presentation is part of the sales environment
  • Hotels and accommodation creating a branded arrival experience from the ground up
  • Multi-site businesses maintaining consistent brand presence across all locations simultaneously

Logo entrance mats function as entrance mats first, branding tools second. They still need to perform dirt and moisture capture at the door. A good custom logo mat delivers both: effective entry contamination control with a sharp branded presentation that reflects well on the business behind the door.

Mat Hire vs Buying Outright: Which Model Works Best?

Most NZ businesses default to purchasing mats outright without considering whether a managed hire model would serve them better. The right answer depends on your volume, hygiene requirements, and how much internal capacity you have for mat maintenance.

Factor Buying Outright Mat Hire / Managed Rental
Upfront Cost High — full purchase cost per mat Low — no capital outlay; periodic rental fee
Cleaning Your responsibility — in-house or outsourced at your cost Included in service; provider uses industrial laundering
Replacement Your cost when mats wear out or are damaged Provider replaces worn mats as part of the service
Hygiene Standards Depends entirely on your cleaning regime Professionally laundered to consistent standard every cycle
Admin Burden High — tracking condition, organising cleaning, managing replacements Near zero — provider manages the full lifecycle
Flexibility Fixed — you own what you have Scalable — adjust mat numbers as your business changes
Best For Permanent, low-traffic installations with in-house cleaning capability Businesses with ongoing hygiene needs, high traffic, or multiple locations

For most commercial operations in NZ, mat rental is the more cost-effective and operationally simple choice. The ongoing cost of professional cleaning and proactive replacement, bundled into a predictable rental fee, consistently outperforms the true total cost of owning and maintaining commercial mats in-house.

Stop managing mat cleaning and replacements yourself. Let Alsco Uniforms handle the full cycle — collection, cleaning, inspection, delivery — across NZ.

How a Mat Rental Service Works

A managed mat rental service is straightforward in practice. Once you are set up with a provider, the service runs on a regular cycle with no action required from your team.

1

Initial consultation and mat selection. The provider assesses your premises, identifies the right mat types and sizes for each location, and sets up the initial delivery of correctly specified mats.

2

Regular collection. On an agreed schedule, the provider collects used mats from your premises. Frequency depends on your traffic level and hygiene requirements: high-volume food environments may require weekly collection; lower-traffic office environments may operate on a fortnightly cycle.

3

Industrial laundering and inspection. Collected mats go through professional industrial cleaning that removes embedded dirt, grease, and bacteria to a level domestic or commercial washing cannot achieve. Mats are inspected for wear, damage, or declining performance during this process.

4

Clean mat redelivery. Fresh, clean mats are delivered to your premises at the same time as collection, so there is no downtime. Your entry points and floor areas always have a performing mat in place.

5

Proactive replacement. When a mat reaches the end of its serviceable life, the provider replaces it automatically. You never have a degraded, non-performing mat in circulation.

The result is a mat program that runs itself. Your facilities team does not need to track mat condition, organise cleaning, or manage replacement orders. That administrative load sits entirely with the provider.

Safety Workwear NZ: Hi-Vis, PPE & Flame Resistant Clothing

Your practical guide to NZ workplace clothing obligations, garment standards, and managed compliance.

10 min read
Updated May 2026
For H&S Managers, Site Supervisors & Business Owners

Workwear Is Not Optional. It Is a Legal Obligation.

When a worker steps onto a construction site, into an electrical substation, or onto a factory floor, what they’re wearing is not a preference. It is a legal requirement under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 (HSWA). For businesses operating in high-risk industries across New Zealand, providing the right workwear is not a nice-to-have. It is a duty of care.

The problem is that “safety workwear” covers a wide range of garments, standards, and compliance obligations, and not all of them are obvious. What qualifies as compliant hi-vis clothing? When is flame resistant fabric required? What does PPE workwear actually mean beyond a hard hat and steel-capped boots?

This guide gives H&S managers, site supervisors, and business owners in construction, electrical, civil, and manufacturing a plain-English breakdown of NZ workplace clothing requirements, the key standards that govern them, and how a managed workwear service takes compliance off your plate.

NZ Workplace Clothing Requirements: What Does the Law Say?

The Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 is the primary legislation governing workplace safety in New Zealand. Under HSWA, every business is classified as a Person Conducting a Business or Undertaking (PCBU). The PCBU has a primary duty of care to ensure the health and safety of workers, so far as is reasonably practicable.

In plain terms, this means identifying hazards, assessing risk, and putting controls in place to eliminate or minimise those risks. Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), including protective clothing, sits within this framework as a control measure.

Key Legal Points Under HSWA 2015

PCBUs must provide all necessary protective clothing for workers at no cost to the worker. It is an offence under HSWA to charge employees for PPE required under the Act. Workers are also obligated to wear the protective clothing and equipment provided to them.

The WorkSafe NZ guidelines on protective clothing confirm that PCBUs must select clothing that meets relevant AS/NZ Standards, is fit for the specific risk, is comfortable and compatible with other PPE, and accounts for individual worker requirements including size and fit.

Crucially, the hierarchy of controls under HSWA means PPE is the last line of defence, not the first. Businesses should first attempt to eliminate hazards, then substitute or isolate them, then use engineering or administrative controls. Only when those measures cannot adequately protect workers should PPE be the primary control. In high-risk industries, that point is reached regularly, which is why compliant workwear matters so much.

The penalties for non-compliance are significant. Serious failures to meet duties under HSWA can result in fines up to $3 million for a PCBU, plus personal liability for officers and directors. Always consult WorkSafe NZ for guidance specific to your industry and workplace.

Hi-Vis Workwear in NZ: When Is It Mandatory?

High-visibility workwear is among the most visible (literally) compliance requirements in the NZ workplace. The governing standard in New Zealand is AS/NZS 4602.1:2011 AS/NZS 4602.1, which specifies minimum performance requirements for high-visibility safety garments in high-risk applications. This standard remains current within New Zealand.

Hi-vis clothing is mandatory for workers who need to be seen at a distance, against complex or moving backgrounds, or in conditions that obstruct visibility. In practice, it is a legal requirement for workers in:

  • Road and highway construction and maintenance, including traffic management personnel
  • Rail operations and rail infrastructure, where proximity to moving trains creates serious strike risk
  • Civil and infrastructure construction sites where plant and equipment operate
  • Utilities work including power, water, and telecommunications crews working near traffic or machinery

Understanding the AS/NZS 4602.1 Classifications

Class Use Case What It Requires
Class D (Daytime) Workers visible only in daylight hours Minimum area of fluorescent background fabric on torso and sleeves
Class N (Night-time) Workers visible only after dark Minimum area of retroreflective tape in required configuration
Class D/N (Day/Night) Workers visible at all hours — the most common requirement Combination of fluorescent fabric AND retroreflective tape meeting both thresholds

What to Look for When Sourcing Hi-Vis Garments

  • A compliance label stitched into the garment referencing AS/NZS 4602.1:2011 and the relevant class (D, N, or D/N)
  • At least 0.2m² of unbroken fluorescent background material on the torso — logos and pockets cannot break this area
  • Retroreflective tape compliant with AS/NZS 1906.4:2010 for any D/N or N-class garment
  • Correct garment condition — reflective properties degrade with washing and wear. Laundering to standard matters as much as initial compliance
  • Correct colour: fluorescent yellow-green or fluorescent orange-red are the two recognised hi-vis colours under the standard

Note: Compliance must be assessed at the date of issue and maintained throughout garment use. Faded or heavily worn hi-vis garments may no longer meet the standard, exposing your business to liability. This is a key reason managed workwear rental programs track garment condition and replace items proactively.

Flame Resistant and Fire Rated Workwear Explained

Flame resistant (FR) and fire rated workwear are not the same thing, and the distinction matters when your team works in environments with ignition or arc flash risk.

Flame resistant (FR) fabrics are made from materials that are inherently resistant to burning, or that have been chemically treated to resist ignition. When exposed to a flame source, FR fabrics will char rather than melt or continue to burn once the source is removed. This limits the burn injury a worker sustains in an incident.

Fire rated workwear generally refers to garments that have been tested to a specific performance standard and certified to provide a defined level of protection. Not all FR fabric is fire rated to the same level, and the rating determines which applications the garment is appropriate for.

Industries That Require FR or Fire Rated Garments

Electrical & Utilities
Oil & Petrochemical
Welding & Metal Fabrication
Forestry & Wildland
Mining
Chemical Processing

In electrical and utilities environments, the specific risk is arc flash: a sudden release of electrical energy that produces an intense thermal event. Standard workwear made from synthetic fabrics will melt onto skin in an arc flash, dramatically worsening burn injuries. FR rated garments are designed to self-extinguish and provide a critical window for the worker to escape the hazard.

For wildland firefighting applications, AS/NZS 4824:2021 AS/NZS 4824 specifies test methods and minimum performance requirements for protective clothing used in wildland firefighting. For structural firefighting and other high-radiation environments, separate standards apply. Always verify the specific standard applicable to your work context, and consult WorkSafe NZ if you are unsure which rating your workers require.

Practical rule: If your workers operate near live electrical equipment, open flame, molten materials, or flammable substances, a PCBU duty-of-care assessment will almost certainly require FR-rated garments. The question is not whether to provide them, but which rating and standard applies.

PPE Workwear: The Full Picture

Hi-vis and flame resistant clothing are the most discussed categories of protective workwear, but PPE extends well beyond them. Depending on the hazards present in your workplace, your team may require protective clothing across several additional categories.

🧪

Chemical-Resistant Suits

Required in environments where workers handle or are exposed to hazardous chemicals, solvents, or agricultural substances. Material selection depends on the specific chemicals involved.

✂️

Cut-Resistant Apparel

Used in glass handling, metal fabrication, meat processing, and forestry operations where laceration risk is high. Includes cut-resistant gloves, sleeves, and aprons.

❄️

Cold Weather & Wet Weather Gear

For outdoor workers in NZ’s variable climate. Includes insulated and waterproof outerwear that must still meet hi-vis requirements where applicable.

🛡️

Arc Flash PPE

Rated arc flash suits and face protection for electrical workers. The arc rating (cal/cm²) must be matched to the incident energy level calculated for the specific task.

🏭

Food-Safe Workwear

Contamination-free garments for food processing environments. Must be laundered to HACCP and NZ food safety standards, not domestic or general commercial washing.

🌿

Biosecurity & Cleanroom Apparel

Used in agricultural, pharmaceutical, and research settings where contamination in or out of the work area must be controlled.

The key principle across all PPE categories is that the garment must be fit for the specific hazard. Generic or off-specification clothing does not satisfy a PCBU’s duty of care, regardless of how it looks. Always cross-reference garment specifications against the hazard profile in your workplace risk assessment.

Industrial Workwear: What Trades and Heavy Industries Wear

Beyond regulated safety categories, industrial workwear encompasses the durable, functional garments that trade and heavy industry workers rely on every day. Choosing the right industrial workwear is about matching the garment to the physical demands of the job.

Work Trousers

Heavy-duty work trousers for industrial environments are typically made from cotton drill, polycotton, or ripstop fabric. Key features include reinforced knees and seat panels, multiple cargo pockets, and belt loops rated for tool belts. For trade work in NZ, trousers should be comfortable across a range of movement given the physical nature of the work.

Drill Shirts and Work Shirts

Cotton drill shirts are the backbone of trade workwear. They offer durability, breathability, and the ability to carry branding. For electrical workers, shirts must be non-synthetic to avoid the melt-on-skin risk in arc flash events. Long-sleeve drill shirts provide additional forearm protection on-site.

Work Boots

While not a garment, footwear is part of the workwear picture. NZ construction and industrial sites typically require boots complying with AS/NZS 2210 for safety footwear, with steel-capped or composite-capped toe protection and appropriate sole rating for the environment.

Outerwear

Site jackets, fleece mid-layers, and waterproof shells for outdoor workers must maintain compliance with any underlying hi-vis or PPE requirements. An outer layer worn over a compliant hi-vis garment may compromise compliance if it obscures retroreflective tape or fluorescent material.

Hire vs Buy: Which Is Right for Your Worksite?

When it comes to procuring safety workwear, most NZ businesses choose between buying garments outright or engaging a managed hire/rental service. The right answer depends on your headcount, industry, compliance obligations, and operational complexity.

Factor Buying Outright Managed Hire / Rental
Upfront Cost High — full garment purchase cost per employee Low — no capital outlay; periodic fee covers supply
Laundering Your responsibility — domestic or in-house washing may not meet standards Handled by provider using industrial laundering to AS/NZ standards
Compliance Tracking Your responsibility — tracking garment condition and replacement timing falls on your team Provider monitors garment lifecycle and replaces proactively
Staff Turnover Each new starter requires new purchases; returned garments may not be reusable Provider adjusts garment allocation as headcount changes
Audit Readiness You must maintain your own garment records Provider can supply records of garment condition, replacement, and laundering history
Best For Very small, stable teams with simple uniform needs and in-house laundry capability Businesses with ongoing compliance obligations, rotating staff, or regulated laundering requirements

For most NZ businesses in construction, electrical, civil, food processing, or manufacturing, the managed rental model delivers stronger compliance outcomes with lower administrative burden. When garment condition tracking, professional laundering, and proactive replacement are handled by a specialist provider, the risk of your team working in non-compliant gear drops substantially.

How a Managed Workwear Service Keeps You Compliant

A managed workwear service does more than supply garments. It takes on the compliance lifecycle that most businesses struggle to keep on top of internally.

1

Garment condition monitoring. Providers track when hi-vis fabrics begin to fade, when retroreflective tape loses effectiveness, and when FR garments have reached the end of their tested service life. Replacement happens before a garment becomes non-compliant.

2

Industrial laundering to standard. Commercial washing to the correct temperature, cycle, and detergent specification preserves garment properties that domestic washing degrades. For food-safe and FR garments, this is non-negotiable.

3

Proactive replacement. When a garment is damaged, lost, or reaches the end of its service life, the provider replaces it without delay. Your workers are never left working in non-compliant gear because a replacement order is pending.

4

Audit-ready records. A reputable managed provider can supply documentation of garment issuance, condition, laundering history, and replacement cycles. This supports compliance audits and WorkSafe NZ inspections without scrambling for records internally.

For H&S managers running busy sites, this model removes one of the more time-consuming compliance administration burdens from the team. The obligation remains with the PCBU, but the operational delivery sits with a specialist.

Managed Uniform Service NZ | Hire, Rent & Supply Workwear

For Operations Managers & Business Owners

Why Managing Uniforms In-House Costs More Than You Think

Think about the last time a uniform went missing on your site. Someone had to chase it. Someone had to replace it. Someone had to pay for it. Then factor in laundering, repairs, reordering when staff leave, and the admin hours that quietly disappear into all of it.

For most NZ businesses, work uniforms feel like a small operational detail. They’re not. When you add up garment procurement, industrial washing, repairs, replacements for lost or damaged items, and the staff time spent managing it all, the true cost of an in-house uniform program is almost always higher than what shows up in the budget.

There’s also a compliance dimension. Industries like food processing and healthcare have hygiene standards that require garments to be professionally laundered to specific protocols. Sending uniforms home with staff or running them through a standard washing machine doesn’t meet those standards. It exposes the business to risk.

A managed uniform service takes all of that off your plate. Supply, laundry, repairs, and replacements are handled by the provider, leaving you to focus on running your business. This guide walks you through how the model works, which procurement option suits your situation, and what to look for when choosing a supplier in New Zealand.

What Is a Managed Uniform Service and How Does It Work?

A managed uniform service is a full-service arrangement where a provider supplies, cleans, repairs, and replaces your work uniforms on an ongoing basis. Instead of purchasing garments outright and managing everything internally, you pay a regular fee and the provider handles the entire lifecycle of your workwear.

The typical model covers: supply of garments tailored to your industry and role requirements, regular collection of soiled uniforms, professional industrial laundering that meets hygiene and compliance standards, repair or replacement of damaged or worn items, and scheduled redelivery of clean garments. Some providers also handle custom branding, embroidery, and individual garment tracking so nothing gets lost in the cycle.

Onboarding with a managed uniform provider generally follows a straightforward process:

1

Consultation and needs assessment. The provider meets with you to understand your industry, headcount, role types, compliance requirements, and any customisation needs.

2

Garment selection and fitting. Staff are individually measured to ensure proper fit. Garment types are selected based on the work environment.

3

Branding and customisation. Logos, names, and any required identification are added to garments before the first delivery.

4

Delivery and handover. Clean, branded uniforms are delivered to your site. Frequency of collection and redelivery is agreed upfront.

5

Ongoing management. The provider continues the cycle, handles replacements as garments wear out, and adjusts for staff changes as needed.

The result is a predictable, fixed cost with no surprises, no admin burden, and a consistently professional look across your entire team.

Hire vs Rent vs Buy: Which Model Suits Your Business?

Not all uniform programs are built the same way. Before committing to a provider, it’s worth understanding the three main procurement models and where each one fits.

Model How It Works Best For Things to Consider
Rental / Managed Hire Provider owns the garments and manages the full lifecycle including laundry, repair and replacement Businesses with ongoing uniform needs, compliance requirements, or high staff turnover No upfront capital cost; ongoing weekly or monthly fee; provider handles everything
Hire (Casual / Short-Term) Garments are hired for a defined period or project; returned at the end Seasonal workers, event staff, contractors, or short-term projects Flexible and low commitment; not cost-effective for permanent teams
Outright Purchase / Supply Business buys garments upfront and owns them; responsible for laundering and replacement Small teams with simple, stable uniform needs and in-house laundry capacity Higher upfront cost; all maintenance, replacement and storage falls on the business

For most NZ businesses operating across trade, food service, hospitality, or industrial sectors, a managed rental arrangement delivers the strongest combination of cost certainty, compliance assurance, and operational simplicity. Outright purchase can work for very small, stable teams, but as headcount grows or compliance requirements tighten, the managed model typically becomes the more cost-effective choice.

Key Benefits of a Managed Uniform Program

The case for outsourcing your uniform program goes beyond convenience. Here’s what businesses across New Zealand consistently gain from making the switch.

Cost Savings and Predictability

No upfront garment outlay. No surprise replacement costs. A fixed periodic fee replaces the irregular, unpredictable spend of managing uniforms in-house.

Brand Consistency

Every staff member, across every shift, arrives in clean and correctly branded attire. No faded logos, no mismatched garments, no team members wearing their own clothing because theirs is in the wash.

Hygiene and Compliance

Industrial laundering meets NZ food safety, healthcare, and WH&S standards that domestic washing simply cannot achieve. Critical for regulated industries.

Time Savings

Administration, chasing lost garments, reordering, organising repairs, managing laundry rosters. A managed service removes all of it from your team’s to-do list.

Staff Satisfaction

Staff receive well-fitting, consistently clean uniforms without the burden of laundering responsibility. It’s a small but meaningful part of the employee experience.

Garment Lifecycle Management

Providers track garment condition and replace worn or damaged items proactively. You never have uniforms in circulation that don’t meet your presentation standard.

Industries That Use Managed Uniform Services in NZ

Managed uniform programs are used across a wide range of industries in New Zealand. The common thread is businesses where staff presentation, hygiene, safety, or brand consistency matter at a professional level.

🏥

Healthcare

Clinics, aged care facilities, and allied health providers require garments laundered to infection-control standards. Managed programs remove the burden from clinical staff entirely.

🏢

Corporate and Commercial

Offices, government agencies, and commercial services businesses use branded corporate workwear to maintain a consistent, professional public image across their teams.

🛒

Retail

Retail teams benefit from standardised, branded uniforms that help customers identify staff quickly and build trust in the brand at the point of sale.

Are Work Uniforms Tax Deductible in NZ?

This is one of the most common questions NZ business owners ask, and the answer depends on what type of clothing is involved.

IRD Position on Work Clothing

According to Inland Revenue (IRD), work clothing is tax deductible when it is a uniform or specialist clothing that is not reasonably suitable for private use and is necessary and peculiar to a particular occupation. Everyday work clothing, even when purchased specifically for work, does not generally qualify as a business deduction.

In practical terms, the following typically qualify:

  • Branded uniforms with company logos or identification
  • Protective workwear such as hi-vis gear, overalls, and safety clothing required for WH&S compliance
  • Specialist attire not suitable for private wear, such as chef whites or food processing garments

The following typically do not qualify:

  • Plain, unbranded clothing purchased for work but wearable privately (e.g. standard black trousers)
  • Fashion items or general business attire not specific to an occupation

For businesses using a managed uniform rental service, payments made to the provider are a business operating expense and are generally deductible in the period incurred. Always confirm your specific circumstances with a qualified accountant or tax adviser before making any claims. IRD rules can change, and your situation may have unique factors that affect eligibility.

What to Look for in a Uniform Supplier in NZ

Not all uniform suppliers offer the same level of service. Before you sign an agreement, run through this checklist to make sure the provider can actually deliver what your business needs.

  • NZ-wide delivery capability. Can they service all of your locations? A single centralised operation or a franchise network with genuine national reach makes a significant difference if your business operates across multiple regions.
  • Garment range across industries. Do they stock the right garment types for your sector? Trade workwear, food-safe attire, hospitality uniforms, and corporate wear all have different requirements. Confirm the provider has the specific range you need.
  • Certified industrial laundering. For industries with hygiene obligations, ask whether the provider’s laundering processes meet relevant NZ or international standards. This is not an optional consideration for food processing or healthcare environments.
  • Collection and redelivery turnaround. How quickly are garments collected, cleaned, and returned? For businesses relying on daily uniform use, a slow turnaround creates operational problems. Confirm the frequency and reliability of the service cycle.
  • Customisation and branding options. Can they add your logo, staff names, and brand colours? Confirm what embroidery, printing, and labelling options are available and what lead times apply.
  • Minimum order quantities. Some providers set minimum garment or contract thresholds. Check these upfront so smaller businesses aren’t locked out or caught off-guard.
  • Flexibility for staff changes. Businesses with seasonal headcount fluctuations or high staff turnover need a supplier that can scale garment numbers up or down without penalty. Ask specifically about this before committing.
  • Contract terms and exit conditions. Understand the length of the agreement, what’s included in the monthly or weekly fee, and what happens if you need to exit early.

A supplier worth partnering with will have clear answers to all of the above before you’ve signed anything. If they can’t answer these questions upfront, that tells you something.

Alsco Uniforms Donates First Aid Kit to Local Community Eatery

At Alsco Uniforms Dunedin,  we believe in backing organisations that are making a meaningful difference in our communities, and few do that quite like The Bowling Club.

Founded by Jackie and Liam in 2022, The Bowling Club started as a small food truck navigating the cold southerlies of South Dunedin. But from the very beginning, it was about more than food. Their vision was to create a space where people from all walks of life could gather, connect, and share kai, a space where everyone is welcome.

“We are so grateful to the Alsco Uniforms team for sharing so generously with us! Supplying us with aprons, tea towels & first aid supplies means all of our services are able to flow more smoothly, and there’s more energy to focus on what The Bowling Club is really about: connecting with people and making nourishment accessible in our community” – says Jackie & team

Now operating a thriving community eatery, The Bowling Club is open daily for lunch and dinner and runs on a pay-what-you-feel model. That means diners can pay the set price, what they can afford, or nothing at all, and those in a position to give more, there’s even an option to pay it forward and cover a meal for someone else.

To help support the important work Jackie, Liam, and their team are doing, Alsco Uniforms Dunedin recently donated a fully serviced, wall-mounted First Aid cabinet, now installed in The Bowling Club’s kitchen. We’re also proud to supply the staff aprons and kitchen tea towels that help keep their team running smoothly every day.

“Alsco Uniforms Dunedin branch is pretty proud to support our local communities. It’s such an honour to be part of what Jackie, Liam, and The Bowling Club team are building in their unwavering commitment to bring people together from all walks to share kai, in a world that at times, can feel a divided and lonely place,” says Megan Lahood, Client Manager for Dunedin, who managed the relationship with The Bowling Club.

From serving 300 meals a night to over 1,000, and growing from a team of 2 to 24, The Bowling Club continues to show what’s possible when compassion meets community spirit.
