Our Repurposing

Alsco Uniforms is taking community engagement to new heights with our incredible volunteer Alsco Uniforms Ambassadors. Backed by products from all our branches, this growing initiatives aims to give goods a second life, reducing waste and supporting our communities. Join us in making a difference and keeping our planet green!

At Alsco Uniforms, we’re proud to support over 80 charitable organisations in New Zealand and abroad. Our partnerships include long-standing relationships with Shine, Healthy Homes, and Medical Aid Abroad.

Led by Pat Munro (who still volunteers her time even six years after her retirement!) and her dedicated team, our Ambassadors have made an incredible impact over the past five years.

Despite challenges like the Covid-19 pandemic, they’ve donated a large amount of sheets, pillowcases, cot sheets (made from repurposed king and queen sheets) and over 2,000 first aid kits just in 2023.

This initiative is a testament to our shared commitment to helping those in need.

We also extend our heartfelt thanks to PBT (Peter Baker Transport). Since late 2018, they have generously picked up and delivered donated goods from our Kingsland operation to locations across New Zealand, free of charge.

Auckland City Mission Cookoff

Alsco Uniforms is proudly taking part in the Auckland City Mission cook off yet again for the fifth year in a row!

Our Fresh & Clean Business Manager, Troy Wild, has stepped up to represent Alsco Uniforms in this year’s Auckland City Mission Cook Off event for 2024. This is an event that Alsco has been a part of for several years now and we are proud to be involved again this year.

Troy took on the challenge of cooking a delicious three-course dinner for 150 guests of the Auckland City Mission – many of whom are experiencing homelessness or face a daily struggle to put food on the table.

Troy managed to raise a staggering $45,000 out of his original goal of $10,000 for the Mission which will go towards providing nutritious food for hungry families.

Here is what Troy had to say:

“On 10th June at St Matthew in the City I proudly took part in the Auckland City Mission Cook Off .I joined business leaders and top chefs to cook for a cause, through what was a special evening of good food and great company.

For one night, we came together to cook a delicious three-course meal for 150 Mission guests, many of whom are experiencing homelessness or face a daily struggle to put food on the table. It is a special night for everyone involved.

I was shocked to learn that currently one in five Auckland families are struggling to put food on the table. EVERY SINGLE WEEK the Mission distributes as many as 1,000 food parcels to families who are struggling to put food on the table AND serves over 1,500 warm and nutritious meals to people who are living on the streets or in substandard accommodation without any ability to cook.

What is alarming is that as winter approaches, many people living on the streets will bear the brunt of the cold, wet and miserable weather. While people who are already struggling will be put in the position of having to make an impossible choice on whether to keep their family warm or to buy groceries.

Let’s make a difference this winter and provide hope and practical support to people in our community in greatest need.”

Giving Something Back

In early 2017, Alsco Uniforms partnered with the Million Metres Streams Project to help transform New Zealand’s waterways.

Led by the Sustainable Business Network (SBN), with support from Alsco Uniforms and DOC (Department of Conservation), Million Metres aims to replant one million metres of waterways by 2026.

Each winter, Alsco Uniforms staff join plating days around the country. See the stats below to see how we’ve contributed so far!

who we support

Healthy Homes Rotorua

SustainabilityOptions is an altruistic business established with a core purpose: to work for the benefit of others with compassion and generosity. They provide free sustainability living advice in the Bay of Plenty Region. Their vision is to support every kiwi home to be warmer and drier and to improve the wellbeing of those living there.

“Alsco Uniforms has been absolutely amazing in their support of our Healthy Homes service in the wider Bay of Plenty over the past 6 years. It’s been a great relationship. The sheets we receive are not only used for bedding to help reduce skin infections, but we also use the sheets provided to assist us with curtain linings, which greatly improve the performance of curtains in helping the home retain heat. The first aid kits are so gratefully received by the families we are supporting. Every year, over 28,000 children are admitted to hospital with respiratory conditions that are associated wit cold, damp housing. The relationship we have with Alsco Uniforms is a really important part of our work in helping cold, at risk, vulnerable families to live in warmer, drier, healthier homes. Thank you hugely to the Alsco Uniforms team for your ongoing and amazing support.”

Alsco Uniforms has enabled RMHC New Zealand® to provide and maintain a comfortable and beautifully furnished bedroom and bathroom. The room Alsco Uniforms sponsors is so essential to families’ wellbeing, offering a safe haven at some of the most difficult times in their lives. Their investment has assisted with keeping their room freshly painted, and affording soft quilts for beds, fresh towels and home comforts.”

Take My Hands

Take My Hands is a social enterprise that contributes to improved healthcare in the Pacific through the access of good medical equipment and knowledge from New Zealand.

“Alsco Uniforms have been working with Take My Hands to get much needed supplies to hospitals and health centers in the Pacific.  We take for granted our access in New Zealand to great equipment and the supplies needed to provide good healthcare.  In the Pacific that same access is a challenge with financial and logistical barriers preventing them from accessing even the most basic supplies.  With their  help we have supplied linens for hospital beds and aged care facilities, and first aid supplies to for rural health centres in the Pacific.  The team at Alsco Uniforms constantly amaze us with their willingness to go the extra mile in making this world a better place to be.”

WELLINGTON PHOENIX MARKETING

Sustainability Trust

Founded in 2003 at Porirua's Trash Palace, a small group of environmentalists began educating locals on waste reduction and sustainable living. The initiative gained momentum in 2004 when it received government support to provide insulation for low-income households, warming 68 homes that year. Today, the organisation insulates around 900 homes annually and operates a bustling Wellington hub.

Since 2019, Alsco Uniforms has proudly partnered with the Sustainability Trust Wellington to support the Curtain Bank. By donating repurposed sheets and tablecloths, they are reused and made into curtain liners, which helps make houses warmer while reducing waste. In 2023, we contributed 79 boxes (approximately 948kg), and as of 2024, we’ve already provided 81 boxes (around 927 kg). This initiative is a true win-win, supporting both our community and a more sustainable future.
